Understanding learning styles: a key to effective teaching and learning

It is suggested that teachers need to cater to different learning styles to suit their learners’ needs. Teachers can provide multiple options for learners to learn and demonstrate their understanding. For example, a teacher can provide written, oral, and visual assignments to cater to different learning styles. They can also provide different modes of instruction in their classrooms, such as lectures, group work, pair work and independent study as a way of reaching out to all learners and making sure that they are learning.

It is also important to remember that learners may have different learning styles for different tasks. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to be flexible and to provide multiple options for learning and assessment to ensure that all learners can learn and succeed academically.

Catering to different learning styles in your classroom can help ensure that all learners are engaged and motivated to learn. The following strategies can be used by teachers in a classroom to cater to different learning styles:

1.    Visual learners:

These learners learn best through images, graphics, and other visual aids. They prefer seeing information presented in a visual format, such as diagrams, charts, pictures, or videos. Visual learners tend to remember information better when it is presented in a way that is visually appealing and easy to understand. As an English language teacher when you are teaching grammar or vocabulary pictures, diagrams, charts and sometimes videos might be useful to facilitate learning. When you teach literature, videos of recorded drama will do a great job to assist you in teaching.

2.    Auditory learners:

These learners learn best through listening and spoken language. They prefer to hear information presented in a spoken or audio format, such as through lectures, discussions, or audio recordings. Auditory learners tend to remember information better when it is presented in a clear and organized manner. A good example is when you are teaching poems, audio are essential tools you can use, having a poem recited in audio format.

3.    Kinesthetic learners:

These learners learn best through hands-on experiences and physical movement. They prefer to learn by doing, such as through experiments, role-plays, or other interactive activities. Kinesthetic learners tend to remember information better when they can apply it to real-world situations and experiences. For example, in teaching literature, you can allow learners to role-play some scenes.

4.    Multimodal learners:

These learners learn best through a combination of different learning styles. You can cater to multimodal learners by incorporating a variety of teaching methods and activities into your lessons, such as using visual aids, conducting discussions, and incorporating hands-on activities. For example, using a song that has actions to teach then allows learners to listen to the song, sing the song and at the same time do the actions that the song requires.

It is important to note that most learners do not exclusively fall under the first three categories. Instead, they often have a combination of learning styles turning them into multimodal learners. For example, a learner may be primarily a visual learner but also benefit from hands-on activities or discussions.

Conclusively, it is important to be mindful of these different learning styles and to provide a variety of teaching methods and activities that cater to each type of learner. This can help ensure that all learners are engaged and motivated to learn. By understanding the different types of learners in your classroom, you can design lessons that are more effective and inclusive and provide opportunities for all learners to succeed. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to be flexible and to provide multiple options for learning and assessment to ensure that all learners can learn and succeed.

    1. Thank you, and learners should be given a chance to express how they learn best. When teachers put learners' needs first before everything, learning becomes easy.

  5. Everyone has the ability to learn and do a lot more. We need to explore different ways of how to make them learn. Each learner is unique, though not explicitly, and when their abilities are explored they can do a lot more. This is an ideal platform.

    1. Thank you, people argue that sometimes context matters a lot when it comes to teaching and learning. This is the bitter truth, but teachers who care for their learners will eventually find a way to help them learn.

  6. I enjoyed learning the article. We as English teachers we have a big role of understanding our learners and which learning style fit them. Therefore this will help to choose the correct learning style to them.

Additionally, multimodal style is the best style to be used by teachers because it fits to all learners despite their learning styles are.

  10. This is a fresh breath of knowledge, now in a class with learners of multiple abilities, the teacher needs to employ different strategies among them being the Universal Design for Learning,(UDL), with this the teacher will move as per the learner needs. In the cases of those with learning difficulties, the teacher in collaboration with other mutlidiscplinary team can develop an IEP tool to meet their learning outcomes at their tempo. Through these, the smart teacher can really teach.

  12. Understanding our learners learning styles enable us teachers to differentiate our instructions in the classroom. As we teach our students we need to understand that not all the materials or methodologies we use will ensure equal access learning to our learners.

  15. Exactly! learners are abled different and each learner is different.

  16. .....what a detailed post! Thank you for that and big up!! It is true that knowing learners with different style makes facilitation easy in and outside the classroom since students possess multiple intelligences which makes each learner learning the best in his/her style. A teacher should focus on reality and nature of the environment and material available when preparing a lesson. This will encourage critical thinking especially for the content with a problem to solve. Example a school with no electricity.. a teacher would ask students about alternative source of energy with language patterns like.. either... or, neither.. nor.. and at the same time thinking of the best option like use of solar energy...
